Fez's (chechia's) are created in Souks. Try and find an open one to see the creators at work. The Bardo Museum is definitely worth a stop. It's set in an old Ottoman palace. It's on the west side of town, take a taxi ride (about ten-minutes). Taxis are called Louages. They are inexpensive, but usually don't depart until they are full. For a little getaway from Tunis, catch a louage up to Sidi Bau Said. It is a little coastal town filled with the expected whitewashed houses with blue shutters and doors on a hilltop overlooking the sea. I stayed at the Hostel, which is a beautiful old palace. They allow bicycles and maybe an occasional motorcycle inside for safekeeping. It's in the heart of the medina, which means that you are close to everything, but it can be difficult to find in the maze of streets. Chez les Orfèvres is a wonderful restaurant on a rooftop terrace, also in the medina. |
