Grand Junction, Colorado

The street names are a little crazy in this part of the country, but it makes sense after a bit. The numbered roads are actually distance to the Utah border, i don't know what the base reference is for the lettered streets.

Grand Junction is the only real city on the western slope, and even that is a stretch if you compare it to other cities. It is beautifully framed by Grand Mesa to the east, Mount Garfield and the bookcliffs to the north, and the Colorado National Monument to the west. There are a lot of outdoor enthusiasts in Grand Junction, but for the most part, it feels rednecky, and the bulk of the people seem to be wal-mart drones. My impression of town is that it is two towns: The main street strip of old stores and restuarants that have a lot of character is the town i like, then there is North Street strip and Mesa Mall where you can find the other half of the town. Obviously i'm biased, but this is my web site, right?

Mesa Theater has bands, parties, and tons of other activities. It's a great venue, and the only one of its kind in Grand Junction, but is usually only open Thursdays through Saturdays.

You should get all of your outdoor gear at Summit County Mountaineering. They are a good shop, and REI has become a big corporate pig.

There is a BLM office north of I-70 off Horizon Drive where you can get maps and info for all of the great BLM areas.

Cinema at the Avalon

645 Main Street
Grand Junction, CO 81501
970-243-7033

A single-screen independent theater in downtown Grand Junction. They are a non-profit, and show great independent films. You should definitely check out a movie there if you're in town for any length of time.

The only way that I know of to get to Main street is to take the 6 & 50 exit heading south, and go a couple of miles. At a fork, turn right (not up an exit ramp, a regular fork) and get in the left lane. Main street will be a left turn. Take a look at this map to get a feel for Grand Junction.

Grand Junction has a whitewater shop called "Whitewater West" on south 7th street. I didn't get a chance to go there. Other bike shops include Velo Junction, Ruby Canyon, and Brown.

Fruita obviously has great, and well-developed mountain biking trails, but Grand Junction has it's own Lunch Loop area, which is also the Tabeguache trailhead. Get more Grand Junction trail info at gjmountainbiking.com.

There are a variety of paved trails around Grand Junction as well. Check out the Parks & Rec Riverfront trails page. More maps.
