Ljubljana is not a well known city, and is not very large, yet has a very nice old town. Pretty much everything that you want to see is all located in a small central area, watched over by a castle up on the hill. There is a great market, designed by Joz^e Plec^nik, the same architect that did the Prague castle. There is a small shopping area with bars, shops, and restaurants. At the center of it all is a circular plaza (Pres^ernov trg) with three bridges right next to each other. There are always people hanging out at the statue there, and you can often see students there playing guitar and just hanging out.
Check out www.pogoer.org. A guy that moved to Ljubljana from Boston made the site for fun and has all sorts of commentary on Ljubljana, and Slovenia in general.
The Tru-e-Bar has nice outdoor seating right in the old heart of old town. In the evenings it has a much darker interior and was decorated with old political cartoon in the stairs going down to the toilets. They were remodeling summer 2001, so I couldn't go inside, but have liked it in the past. I got the impression that they may be getting a bit big for themselves. The name is a play with words. Primoz Trubar was the author of the first books in Slovene and held an important role in defining Slovenia as a nation. The Tru-e-bar is on Trubar street, where there are a couple of other bars that play with the name.
The Jazz Club Gajo-Drus^tvo has regular jam sessions and often has bands. I was there once several years ago and really enjoyed the atmosphere.

The book & map store PE Geonavtik has surprisingly large variety of travel books and maps. They have a particularly decent sized map collection for hiking and boating in Slovenia and Croatia. The prices are high for foreign published material.

for alpine and hiking maps, try the publisher PZS. PE Geonavtek has them, and I also read that you can get them at Kod & Kam trg Francoske revolucije 7, Ljubljana, but I couldn't find that.
I have always stayed at the Hotel Turist. The Slon is way too expensive. The Turist can sometimes be loud, depending on the room and traffic, but this is probably true of the Slon, and all the downtown hotels. It's not necessarily pretty on the inside, but it's a good compromise between the cheap and the expensive.
August 2001 I payed 7885 SIT per person for a one-bed room.

The dairy queen has been gone from downtown for years now. It was the only one that I had ever seen in Europe and had an incredible location, right across from hotel slon. The originator of the blizzard, poorly copied by mcdonald's mcflurry, has given up the ship. There is now a Quick, a French fast-food joint, at the same location.
My last time going through Ljubljana, the Ljubljanski Poletni Festival music festival was going on (beginning of July). I was only there a day, and didn't get a chance to go, but some locals said that they loved it. Maybe you could too?
(Turish) Baklava is really good at the Turkish restaurant under Karlov ki most www.yildiz-han.com, and at the Bosnian restaurant "Deset v pol" in Stepanjsko naselje quarter.
